Is Notion Tracking Your Email? How to Block It
The answer is not in the privacy policy. It is in a DNS record you can check yourself in about four seconds.
Ask whether Notion email tracking is real and the policy page gives you a lawyerly non answer. So skip it. Run dig +short CNAME info.notion.com. It returns notionlabs.mktoweb.com, a branded tracking host belonging to Adobe Marketo Engage. That one line settles the question better than five thousand words of policy prose, because a tracking host exists for exactly one reason: to sit between you and the thing you clicked, and write down that you did it.
Key Takeaways
- Notion's marketing mail runs on Adobe Marketo Engage:
info.notion.comis a CNAME tonotionlabs.mktoweb.com, the host Marketo uses to record opens and redirect clicks. - SPF records show
notion.comauthorizing Marketo, andmail.notion.soauthorizing Mailgun as well for product notifications. - Notion Mail never shipped sender side read receipts, and Notion's security page says the app blocks IP and geographic tracking and that the team hopes "to block read receipts in the near future."
- The Notion Mail inbox shuts down on September 22, 2026, returning its users to a plain Gmail inbox with no image proxy in front of it.
- A Princeton study of 12,618 emails from 902 senders found 70% carried trackers, so Notion follows the industry default rather than setting it.
Does Notion Track Your Email Opens?
Yes, for its marketing and lifecycle email, and the evidence is public infrastructure, not a confession. The Notion privacy policy says Notion "may use cookies, pixel tags, local storage, and other technologies" to collect information automatically, then never gets more specific. The DNS does.
Three records, queryable from any machine:
notion.comTXT containsv=spf1 include:mktomail.com ~all, authorizing Marketo to send as Notion.info.notion.comCNAMEs tonotionlabs.mktoweb.com, thensj20.mktossl.com. A Marketo branded tracking domain, tenant name and all.mail.notion.soaddsinclude:mailgun.organd Mailgun MX records, so notifications and marketing blasts leave on different rails.
What Marketo does with a branded tracking domain is no secret either. It inserts a transparent image into outbound mail and rewrites every link so the click hits the tracking host and gets logged before the redirect, behavior Adobe's own practitioners describe openly in the Adobe Marketo Engage community. I will not quote you a pixel path, because query strings rotate and the exact route depends on tenant configuration. The hostname is the stable thing. Watch the hostname.
Did Notion Mail Have Read Receipts?
No. This is the part almost everyone gets backwards, because most AI email clients do ship open tracking.
Notion Mail, the Gmail backed client, went the other direction. Its security practices page states plainly that Notion Mail "securely and privately proxies all remote image loading to prevent IP tracking" and "blocks IP and geographic tracking." Then comes the sentence worth reading twice: "We hope to block read receipts in the near future."
That is a company saying, in its own documentation, that proxying is not blocking. And it is correct. A proxy fetches the pixel on your behalf from a datacenter address, so the sender learns nothing useful about your location or device. It still learns the message was opened, because somebody still requested the image. Gmail's own proxy through googleusercontent.com has the identical hole, which is why Gmail read receipts still work despite it.
The Shutdown Is a Privacy Downgrade Nobody Wrote About
Notion Mail's inbox shuts down on September 22, 2026. Every outlet framed it as an AI story: agents got good enough that more than half of users stopped opening the inbox, so the inbox went. Notion's migration help page tells users to export drafts, scheduled emails, snippets and auto label instructions by September 21, and notes mail history is safe because Notion Mail always synced two ways with Gmail.
All true, and all beside the point if you care about tracking. The thing that does not migrate is the proxy. Every Notion Mail user is returned to a stock Gmail inbox, and whatever protection they had came from the client. If you moved there partly because it advertised blocking IP and geographic tracking, September 22 is the day that expires.
Note the symmetry. Notion built a mail client blocking other companies' pixels while its own marketing team sent through Marketo. Less hypocrisy than how large organizations work, and exactly why checking whether a specific email is tracked beats trusting any vendor's stated position.
How Do You Find the Tracking Pixel in a Notion Email?
Read the raw message source in Gmail and search it for the tracking hostname. Under a minute, and you never have to trust a screenshot again.
- Open a Notion marketing email in Gmail on desktop.
- Click the three dot menu at the top right, then Show original. A new tab opens with the full source, headers included.
- Press Ctrl+F or Cmd+F and search
info.notion.com. Every hit is a request your client would make to Marketo. - Now search
3D"https. HTML bodies are usually quoted printable encoded, so=appears as=3Dand long lines break with a trailing=. Miss this and you will call a tracked email clean. - Look for an
<img>carryingwidth="1"andheight="1", CSS withwidth:1px, or a src ending in a long opaque token. That is the open beacon. - Check the
hrefvalues. Any link pointing at the tracking host rather thannotion.comis a redirect that logs the click first.
The same procedure works on any sender. Our walkthrough on detecting email tracking pixels in Gmail covers the encoding traps in more depth.
What About Notion Forms and Notion Sites?
Forms are how your address enters the system, which makes them the front half of the same pipeline.
A Notion form auto creates a Respondent property, and publicly shared forms record respondents as anonymous unless the form explicitly asks for an address through an Email field. Notion's forms documentation also covers submission confirmations and automations that email the respondent afterward. Embed that form on a Notion site, and any address typed into it becomes a durable identifier that later opens and clicks get joined against.
That is the mechanism worth internalizing. A tracking pixel is worthless alone. It gains value the moment recipient identity is already known, which is what a form submission hands over.
What This Means for Your Inbox
None of this is a Notion problem. Englehardt, Han and Narayanan at Princeton assembled 12,618 HTML emails from 902 senders and found that 85% contained embedded third party content and 70% contained resources classified as trackers by standard protection lists, published in Proceedings on Privacy Enhancing Technologies. A larger Virginia Tech study of 2.3 million messages found 24.6% carried at least one tracking link, and 91.7% of those tracking URLs hid the recipient identifier behind an MD5 hash.
That MD5 detail is the one to sit with. A tracking URL that looks like harmless hexadecimal is your email address, reversible by anyone holding a list to check it against. Notion is simply a company whose users skew technical enough to go looking. Every SaaS tool you signed up for runs the same play, and the aggregate assembled from your opens says more than any single message. Open times sketch your working hours. Open frequency sorts you into an engagement tier that decides how hard you get emailed.
Ugly Email, PixelBlock, Trocker, Proton, HEY, and Gblock
There are real options here, and honestly they solve overlapping but different problems.
- Ugly Email is signature based and marks tracked messages with an eye icon, so you know before opening. Coverage depends on how current its signature set is.
- PixelBlock blocks pixel loads in Gmail and flags the attempt. A long running, well liked, single purpose tool.
- Trocker is open source, which matters if you would rather read the code than a description of it, and marks tracked links as well as pixels.
- Proton Mail and HEY handle it at the provider level, before mail reaches you. Both work well, and both require moving off Gmail, a far bigger commitment than an extension.
Gblock sits with the first three and differs on three things. The blocklist updates itself, so new tracking hosts get covered without a reinstall. It strips tracking links, not only pixels, which matters against a Marketo setup where the rewritten href leaks as much as the beacon. And it stays inside Gmail, so your address and workflow do not change.
What it does not do: Gblock is not a phishing filter and does not claim to be. It blocks tracking pixels and tracking links. For a closer breakdown see our comparison of Ugly Email, PixelBlock and Trocker, and the wider survey of email tracker Chrome extensions if you want to see the tools doing the tracking rather than the blocking.
How to Block Notion Email Tracking in Gmail
Three approaches, ordered by daily friction.
Stop images loading automatically. In Gmail, open Settings, See all settings, General, then set Images to "Ask before displaying external images." A pixel cannot fire if nothing fetches it. The cost: every legitimate image hides behind a click, and one reflexive tap on "Display images below" fires the beacon with everything else.
Do not click rewritten links directly. Hover first and read the status bar. If the destination is a tracking host rather than the site you expect, reach the page another way. Marketo style redirects usually encode the destination as an opaque token, so there is often nothing readable to extract, capping how far caution gets you.
Block at render time. An extension that strips pixels and tracking links before Gmail draws the message removes the decision entirely. Images still load. Links still work, minus the detour through the logging host. Nothing asks you to be vigilant at 8am, the only property that survives a real inbox. Our guide to blocking read receipts in Gmail covers the tradeoffs.
Whatever you pick, pick it before September 22. Anyone reading mail inside Notion Mail sits behind a proxy that is about to stop existing, and the senders on the other end will notice the change immediately even if you do not.
