Mail.ru Read Receipts: Does Mail.ru Track Your Email?

Mail.ru sells a read receipt that only works if the reader clicks a button. Its Postmaster dashboard needs no click at all: it tells bulk senders how many of their emails Mail.ru users opened, and how many they deleted without reading.

A Mail.ru read receipt exists, which already sets Mail.ru apart from its Russian rival Yandex Mail, where you can only ask for a delivery report. Mail.ru puts its receipt behind the paid Mail Space subscription and makes it polite: the person you write to sees a button and decides whether to press it. So does Mail.ru track you? The receipt is the least of it. Mail.ru's sender tools report opens and unread deletions from inside the mailbox, its help center documents no way to block remote images, and the service is run by VK under Russian data retention law. We fetched 539 Russian and English pages from Mail.ru's help center, developer documentation and legal section on October 12, 2026, and quote the Russian with our translations.

Key Takeaways

  • Mail.ru's help page on important emails says a read confirmation request is available with a Mail Space subscription and arrives only if the recipient presses a Confirm that it was read button.
  • Mail.ru Postmaster, Mail.ru's tool for bulk senders, reports Read, Deleted read and Deleted unread counts for mail sent to Mail.ru users, which needs no tracking pixel at all.
  • The 539 Mail.ru help and legal pages we fetched document no setting to block remote images, and forum posts since 2014 show Mail.ru webmail serving message images through proxy.imgsmail.ru, a proxy Mail.ru has never documented.
  • Article 10.1 of Russian Federal Law 149-FZ requires registered services to keep users' messages for up to six months and metadata for three years, and Global Voices reported in 2017 that Mail.ru was on that register.
  • Ranking Digital Rights placed VK, the owner of Mail.ru, last in its 2025 Big Tech index, saying its reports "no longer outlined" how government requests are handled.

Does Mail.ru Have Read Receipts?

Yes, but only for paying users, and only with the reader's cooperation. Mail.ru's help page on drawing attention to an email, last updated October 2, 2025, has a section called «Запросить подтверждение о прочтении» (Request read confirmation). It opens with one line: «Функция доступна по подписке Mail Space» (The feature is available with a Mail Space subscription).

  • On the website: write your message, press the read confirmation icon in the bottom right corner of the composer, then send.
  • In the Mail app: tap Create, then Write a letter, and tap the same icon before sending.
  • Reply reminder: the same page offers a reminder if nobody replies by a time you pick. It watches your own inbox and says nothing about the recipient. It works only on the website.

Mail.ru does not say whether this feature uses the standard Disposition-Notification-To header that desktop email programs use. That standard is cautious by design: RFC 8098 calls a receipt request "merely a request" that recipients' mail programs "are always free to silently ignore." Our guide to how Gmail read receipts work explains that header in detail. Compare Mail.ru with its neighbor: our Yandex Mail read receipts review found that Yandex offers only a delivery report.

What Happens When Someone Requests a Read Receipt From You?

You see a banner and nothing is sent unless you press it. According to the Mail.ru help page, a strip with the button «Подтвердить, что прочитано» (Confirm that it was read) appears above the message text. «Когда получатель нажмёт на неё, вы получите уведомление на почту. Если он не нажмёт — уведомление не придёт.» (When the recipient presses it, you get a notification by email. If they don't press it, no notification arrives.)

The request is also easy to miss. Mail.ru warns senders that if the recipient opens the message in a desktop mail program, or reads the Mail.ru box through Yandex Mail, «он не увидит ваш запрос» (they won't see your request). Gmail goes further in the other direction: Google's read receipt help page says read receipts "don't work with personal Gmail (@gmail.com) accounts." A Mail.ru receipt, in short, is the one kind of open tracking that asks your permission. The rest of this article is about the kinds that don't.

Can Senders See When You Open Mail.ru Emails?

Bulk senders can, in aggregate, and Mail.ru itself supplies the numbers. Mail.ru Postmaster is a dashboard for companies that send newsletters and notifications. Its English Postmaster overview promises: "See how many people read your mailings, how many of them delete the emails without reading and what number of subscribers marked emails as spam."

The Postmaster statistics page lists the fields:

  • Read: "number of opened emails for the chosen period (one email can be opened several times)."
  • Deleted read: "number of deleted opened emails for the chosen period."
  • Deleted unread: "number of deleted unread emails for the chosen period."
  • API access: the Postmaster API documentation returns the same counts as JSON fields named read, deleted_read and deleted_unread, and can split them by message type if the sender adds an X-Mailru-Msgtype header.

Statistics are grouped by the domain in the sender's valid DKIM signature, so this is a tool for whoever controls a sending domain. None of it relies on an image. The mailbox provider counts what its own users do and reports it, so blocking images in Mail.ru would not change these numbers. The documentation describes totals per domain and per message type. It does not describe a per recipient view, and we found no Postmaster page that names who opened a message. The spam feedback loop is different: the overview says senders "will see what subscribers mark your emails as spam."

This is the part of the story we did not expect. Yandex ran a similar service, Post Office, and closed it in 2020 after saying spammers abused it, as our Yandex review documents. Mail.ru's equivalent is still live: postmaster.mail.ru loaded on October 12, 2026, and the Russian statistics page was last updated September 8, 2025. Ordinary tracking pixels sit on top of that. Mail.ru also renders AMP for email, the interactive format we covered in AMP for email tracking, and its AMP security page says every request from an AMP email passes through a Mail.ru proxy server «чтобы защитить данные пользователя» (to protect user data).

Does Mail.ru Block Tracking Pixels?

Not in any way Mail.ru documents. We searched all 539 pages we fetched for settings about images, external content, pixels or tracking. The only image settings concern signatures and profile pictures. The closest thing to a warning sits on the ad blocker help page, and it points the other way: if images don't load, Mail.ru says, you probably have AdBlock, Adguard, Ghostery or another blocker switched on. For contrast, GMX documents a box that turns off external content, as our GMX review found.

What developers have seen is a proxy. Mail.ru's webmail rewrites image addresses in incoming mail so they load from its own servers:

  • On May 16, 2014, a developer on Habr Q&A reported that newsletter images in Mail.ru webmail were served «из кеша» (from the cache) at proxy.imgsmail.ru.
  • In July 2018, an answer in another Habr thread said Mail.ru loads images «через свои прокси» (through its own proxies) when a message loads and optimizes them.
  • On October 12, 2026, proxy.imgsmail.ru resolved to an address registered to VK Services in the Moscow region, while a nonsense subdomain under imgsmail.ru returned NXDOMAIN, so the name is not a wildcard. The bare hostname answered 403.

Mail.ru has not published what that proxy does: whether it hides your IP address, how long it caches images, or whether it fetches them before you open a message. Google, which does document its image proxy in its Gmail image help, still admits: "Sometimes, senders may know whether you've opened an email that has an image." A proxy can mask where you are. A pixel only needs to learn that someone loaded it.

Does Mail.ru Read Your Mailbox?

Its software does, for filtering, shopping features and, if enabled, advertising. Section 7.1 of the Mail.ru user agreement, in the July 2, 2026 edition, says your incoming and outgoing messages pass «автоматическую обработку» (automatic processing), including spam filters and filters that sort messages into categories.

  • Purchases: the same agreement lets Mail.ru «анализировать и систематизировать» (analyze and organize) receipts, orders, coupons and promo codes, using «технологии автоматического распознавания содержания» (automatic content recognition).
  • Ad personalization: Mail.ru's personalized ads help page says machine learning and neural networks «анализируют информацию в письмах» (analyze information in emails) so you see promotions and discounts. The switch is called Analyze data from emails.
  • Ad partners: section 9 of the Mail privacy policy allows VK to pass account and usage data to partners, naming «операторы рекламных систем, рекламодатели и владельцы инструментов аналитики» (ad system operators, advertisers and owners of analytics tools).
  • Ad free option: Mail Space subscribers get «Никакой рекламы» (No ads at all), per the subscription help page.

Who Else Can Get Your Mail.ru Data?

Russian security agencies can, under a law written for services like Mail.ru. The privacy policy names the operator as ООО «ВК» (VK LLC) and says processing happens «на основании законодательства РФ» (under Russian law). Mail.ru Group renamed itself VK in October 2021, and its rebranding announcement listed Mail.ru Mail among the brands that would carry on.

  • The retention rule: Article 10.1 of Federal Law 149-FZ requires an «организатор распространения информации» (organizer of information dissemination) to store message content in Russia for up to six months, and records of when messages were received, sent and delivered, along with data about the users involved, for three years. That three year period comes from an April 1, 2025 amendment.
  • Who receives it: the same article obliges organizers to hand this data to agencies doing investigative work or state security, and to give the security service the information needed to decode encrypted messages.
  • Mail.ru's status: Global Voices reported in March 2017 that the register of such organizers included "the email client Mail.ru." Roskomnadzor's register site did not respond to us, so we could not confirm the current entry.
  • Transparency: Ranking Digital Rights assessed Mail.Ru email in its 2025 Big Tech Edition and ranked VK 13th with a score of 27 percent, last place alongside Amazon. It wrote that "the available reports no longer outlined how requests are handled."

That is a weaker disclosure record than Yandex's. Yandex publishes a count of government requests about Mail users every six months. We found no comparable VK count for Mail.ru. For a reporter, an activist or anyone talking to one, that matters far more than any pixel.

How to Block Tracking in Mail.ru

Mail.ru gives you no image switch, so these steps limit what you hand over and which program renders your mail. Menu names are Mail.ru's own, translated.

  1. Turn off email analysis for ads. On the website, open Settings, All settings, General, Data from emails. Mail.ru's help says the Analyze data from emails switch is on when it is blue. Switch it to off.
  2. Ignore read confirmation buttons. Nothing reaches the sender unless you press Confirm that it was read.
  3. Unsubscribe in bulk. Mail.ru's mailing list help page collects every list you receive under Manage mailings, with an Unsubscribe button beside each. Fewer newsletters means fewer pixels and fewer Postmaster counts.
  4. Read in a program that blocks remote content. Create a password under Settings, All settings, Security, Passwords for external apps, then connect to imap.mail.ru on port 993. Thunderbird blocks remote images by default, as our Thunderbird review shows.
  5. Hover before you click. A tracked link reports the click even when images are blocked.
  6. Move sensitive conversations. If Russian jurisdiction is the risk, settings will not fix it. Our Proton Mail review covers a Swiss provider that blocks known spy pixels by default.

What This Means If You Read Mail.ru in Gmail

Many people keep a Mail.ru address for Russian services and read everything in Gmail. Google's notice on POP fetching says that "after the first quarter of 2026, this feature no longer supports new users," and existing users lose it in January 2027. The other route is forwarding from Mail.ru: its forwarding help page puts it under Settings, All settings, Filters, Add forwarding, and you confirm it from the receiving inbox.

Once a message lands in Gmail, Gmail's rules apply. Google says that "by default, when you get an email with an image, you'll see the image automatically," so any sender's pixel fires when you open it. Your options there:

  • Gblock: a paid Chrome extension for Gmail on desktop browsers, with a 30 day trial. It blocks known tracking pixels using a blocklist that updates automatically, strips tracking from links, and leaves other images alone. It does nothing inside Mail.ru's website or app, and it cannot touch Postmaster counts.
  • Ugly Email, PixelBlock and Trocker: other Gmail extensions aimed at the same pixels. Our Gmail tracking blocker comparison tests them side by side.
  • Proton Mail and HEY: both block trackers, but you have to move your mail to them. Proton's tracker protection page says it covers spy pixels and, on the web app, removes known trackers from links. HEY says it blocks spy trackers and "tells you who's spying on you."

The Quick Answer

Does Mail.ru have read receipts? Yes, for Mail Space subscribers, and Mail.ru says the sender is told only if the reader presses a confirmation button. Does Mail.ru track you? Its Postmaster tool tells bulk senders how many emails Mail.ru users opened or deleted unread, its webmail documents no way to stop remote images, and its software reads your mail for filtering, shopping features and, unless you switch it off, ads. Behind all of that sits Russian law, which requires registered services to keep your messages and hand them to security agencies on request.

Stop Email Tracking in Gmail

A Mail.ru read receipt waits for your click, but the tracking pixels in your Gmail inbox report every open without asking. Gblock blocks spy pixels and cleans tracking links in Gmail on your desktop browser, so senders can't tell when you read their email.
