Brave just joined a crowded field. Choosing between the five big alias services turns on one question almost no review asks: does the service only relabel you, or does it clean the mail on the way through?

Brave shipped an email alias generator in desktop 1.94 in late August 2026, and the pitch is clean: never hand a website your real address again. Five aliases free, produced from an autofill dropdown or a right click, each forwarding to the inbox you already use. Turn one off and the spam behind it dies. The announcement post frames it as extending Brave's cross site partitioning "past the browser," which is a fair description of what an email alias does. It is also not the same thing as blocking tracking, and the gap between those two ideas is where this comparison gets interesting.

What Are Brave Email Aliases?

Disposable forwarding addresses generated inside the browser, passing mail through to your real inbox while keeping that inbox invisible to the site that asked for it.

The mechanics are ordinary and that is the point. You land on a signup form, Brave offers a generated address in the autofill dropdown, the site stores it, and Brave relays anything sent to it. Every alias gets a note field and an off switch. Why it matters, per Brave's post: an email address behaves as a durable cross site identifier in a way a cookie no longer can, because the ad industry hashes addresses into stable IDs such as RampID and Unified ID 2.0 that survive every cookie control your browser ships. BleepingComputer's coverage adds two details Brave's own page underplays: primary addresses and aliases are stored encrypted, and forwarded messages are deleted from Brave's servers within seconds of relaying.

Two limits before you commit. Mobile has not shipped, so an alias created on your laptop is one you manage from your laptop. Why Does the Brave Account Use OPAQUE?

Because a forwarding service has to hold your real address, and Brave wanted the account guarding it to survive a breach of Brave itself.

OPAQUE is an augmented password authenticated key exchange, standardized by the IRTF in July 2025 as RFC 9807. Its abstract promises "security against pre-computation attacks upon server compromise" and "the ability to hide the password from the server, even during password registration." Plainly: the server never sees your password, and never sees a hash of it either. There is nothing on disk for an attacker to run a cracking rig against.

That is a stronger posture than the usual bcrypt column, and BleepingComputer notes it "reduces exposure to password logging, memory-scraping attacks, and bulk cracking" of leaked databases. Brave is honest about the boundary: OPAQUE does nothing against phishing or a password you reused elsewhere. For developers this is the more interesting half of the release. Does an Email Alias Stop Email Tracking?

No. An alias changes the name on the envelope; it does not touch what is printed inside it.

A tracking pixel is an image tag in the message body pointing at a host the sender controls, usually a 1x1 transparent GIF with a unique token in the URL. Your mail client renders the message and requests that image, from your device, on your network, at the moment you open it, carrying a user agent string and an IP address the sender resolves to a rough location. None of that depends on which address the mail was sent to. Swap in an alias and the sender's dashboard shows the same open, timestamp and device, filed under a different label.

The token in the pixel URL makes this concrete. It is generated per recipient, so the sender already knows which subscriber row fired; your alias just becomes that row's email field. The identifier they use internally never was your address. This is the split behind the table above:

Is an Alias Enough on Its Own?

Not by itself, and 2026 has produced two clean demonstrations of why the alias layer needs a second layer under it.

There is also a category of mail an alias can never cover: everything already addressed to your real inbox. Aliases are forward looking by construction, so whatever protection you want on mail arriving tomorrow from an address you handed out in 2014 has to live somewhere else.

Which One Should You Actually Pick?

Depends which of the two problems is yours, and nothing stops you solving both.

None of the five touches pixels in mail sent to your real address, which is why plenty of people run an alias service and an email privacy extension side by side. The two solve adjacent problems and do not conflict.

What This Means for Your Inbox

The honest version of the alias pitch is narrower than the marketing, and worth understanding because the narrow version is still valuable. An alias breaks the link between the account you created at a retailer and the identity graph that retailer's ad partners are building. It gives you a kill switch for spam. It means a breach there leaks a string that leads nowhere. Real wins, none of them about tracking pixels.

What still happens after you switch: a marketing email lands on your alias, forwards to your inbox, and the moment you open it a beacon reports the open, the read time, your approximate location and your client. Gmail proxies remote images through Google's servers, hiding your raw IP but firing the request all the same, so the open and the timestamp still land. Regulators treat that beacon as its own legal object, and the EDPB's Guidelines 2/2023 place tracking pixels squarely inside Article 5(3) of the ePrivacy Directive, consent rule and all. Nothing in that analysis turns on the address the message was sent to.

So treat the two layers as two layers. Pick an alias service on free tier, platform and reply support, using the table above.
