The FBI has officially warned that criminals are "leveraging AI to orchestrate highly targeted phishing campaigns." Security researchers have documented a 1,265% surge in phishing attacks linked to generative AI trends.

Why AI Phishing Works

Traditional phishing emails had telltale signs: awkward phrasing, grammatical errors, generic greetings, and implausible scenarios. Security awareness training taught people to look for these red flags.

AI eliminates those weaknesses. According to StrongestLayer's analysis, AI powered phishing succeeds through several mechanisms:

When AI can generate flawless, personalized phishing emails, the old advice—"look for spelling errors"—no longer applies. New defensive approaches are required:

  • Verify through separate channels: If an email requests sensitive actions, confirm through a phone call or in person conversation using contact information you already have—not details from the email
  • Slow down high stakes requests: Urgency is a manipulation tactic. Any email demanding immediate action on financial transfers, credential changes, or sensitive data deserves extra scrutiny
  • Use phishing resistant MFA: Hardware security keys or app based authentication protect accounts even if credentials are compromised through phishing
  • Enable email authentication: DMARC, SPF, and DKIM help verify sender legitimacy, though attackers increasingly find ways around these controls
  • Assume competence: Treat every unexpected email requesting action as potentially malicious, regardless of how professional or personalized it appears

The Arms Race Continues

Security vendors are racing to deploy AI powered defenses against AI powered attacks. But attackers have structural advantages: they can test their messages against defensive tools before sending, iterate rapidly, and exploit the inherent difficulty of distinguishing malicious intent from legitimate communication.

Jack Chapman, SVP of Threat Intelligence at KnowBe4, summarized the situation: "Innovation in phishing threats and defenses is accelerating rapidly.
